I had adopted a pup from the Humane Society, and it had Kennel Cough. I took it to the vet and he was given 10 days worth of antibiotics that he took once a day. Within 24 hours I could tell he was feeling all better, but I kept up with the medication.

Kennel Cough is like a chest cold on some levels. Bacterial infection perhaps. It won't go away on its own though. The vet will test the dog to be sure it is what it is. A severe case of worms can also compress on the lungs and make him sound congested, so at the same time request a Heartworm test... And Make sure you get your pet vaccinated against the Kennel Cough....

It takes about two months to get over it. Usually they get over it fine on their own, even the bacterial type, but antibiotics certainly don't hurt. Of course if it is a viral case, they won't help either. And the vaccine actually causes the disease, so some people think it is worthless.

The dog does NOT have to be around other dogs to get kennel cough, it can get it from a dog going by the house has it, or if it is on someone's clothes who was around a dog who had it.

I would tell your vet you suspect kennel cough as he may want to isolate your dog from the others in the waiting area when you bring it in for a check up. I read on here one person said their vet had them wait in their car and they called them on their cell to tell them when it was time to come in and they used a side door. An excellent vet if you ask me.

You need to take her to the vet so she can be property diagnosed. To prevent kennel cough in the future, you need to incorporate the bordatella vaccine into her yearly vaccination appt. It's a liquid that is squirted into the dog's nose. Some kennels require a yearly dose, some every 6 months. If you don't kennel her that often, I would think once a year would be sufficient. If you are kenneling her though and she's never had it, you have to give it to her at least 2 weeks prior or she'll still be at risk.

I don't want to scare you but kennel cough is only if your dog has been around other dogs in a kennel. you should get her a Bordatella vaccine for kennel cough in the future. I don't know how old your dog is or if he or she is over weight . I had a dog and they said it was kennel cough he ended up dying we never were able to find out what happened. save your self alot of grief have a chest xray done to make sure it's not a heart problem asap don't put it off they told me Laddie had kennel cough he died 2 weeks later his cough sounded like a duck kinda or goose his heart rate was really high like he had been running when he hadn't... So please get your dog a chest xray don't wait another minute... please if you can email me and let me know how it went I will pray for you and your dog that everything is going to be ok. My email addy is with my profile. Again I'm sorry if i scared you just want to be safe
