You should not be using the kennel as punishment for your dog. The kennel/crate is supposed to be a "home" for the dog to be in while the owners are away and what not. If you punish your dog by putting him in the kennel or punish him while he is in there then he will associate the kennel with being bad and he will think he is constantly in trouble.

The kennel is his little house and no you should not put a dog in his kennel,he fell safe when he is there.Never scream at the dog only change your key note a bit higher that's it and have a control matter with yourself i mean never scream, never beat him, never ignore him,if you do ignore him well just a couple second. You would not want to scare him off.And don't forget to tell how good he his when he does something good.Don't forget dogs some time are like us they forget to and you say he is older dog.Its just like me i forget some time i would not like to be scolded after,i rather some one tell me in quit way,and i would be secure to.And don't forget your dog is old bring him to the vet before you would do any thing that you would regret go and see the vet maybe he has a little problem or some thing. And don't forget i am not a vet counselor so please bring him to the vet as quietly as you can.HAPPY HOLIDAY TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR OLD DOG TO.Take care of him, please from a dog lover.x o

if you're retraining and it's an older dog it's probably best not to make him feel backed into a corner or little space while you're reprimanding him, it could make him lash out at you.

what would he be doing in his kennel that you would have to do that?

his kennel should be his "safe" place, esp. if he's new to your home.

I never speak to a dog in its crate or even make eye contact. That behavior is a reward to him in his eyes if hes doing something negative in it. What problem are you having?
