Default How to train my dog to be outside his kennell?

I have a 7 month old half american pitbull half american bulldog. There's been about 3 times he's gotten out of his kennell while I've been gone and completely ripped my things apart. I eventually want him to be able to be alone while i'm gone. What's the most effective way to get him trained? Or is it just that he's still to young? He doesn't chew on my things when I am around. And he has plenty of chew toys, bones, ropes ect...

Are you in a position to fence part of your back yard? If so an igloo filled with cedar shavings, a big bowl of water, a boomer ball (large plastic ball) toys and Kong's filled with peanut butter. Start out with weekend outdoors, while you are home to watch. Then gradually add his time outdoors. If you live in an apartment you may want to bet a very large airline kennel like a Vari kennel 600. Give him a frozen kong with peanut butter to like on all day. Also what about a dog-sitter to take him out for a walk once a day.

He is far too young to worry - yet. Give him plenty of toys in his crate that are safe for chewing. Chewing, ripping, killing things is natural for young dogs.

Many breeds, my own as example, are at least 2 before I would trust them alone in my house. That said, I have a 3 year old that as yet can't be trusted.

Slow maturing dogs, like people, take time. Don't rush things. It only sets you back.

As long as he has appropriate chews (as he seems to have) he will eventually leave your things alone. Just like a kid and the cookie jar - they are young and thrilled to have a chance at the forbidden item when you are gone.

He will grow up and be trustworthy. AS LONG AS you have done all in your power to not push to hard. Leave him in the crate with toys. Don't expect too much too soon.

Your dog is bored. How long are you keeping him in the kennel? Really, no dog should be left in a kennel for more than 4 or 5 hours at a time - except for overnight. Occasional all day kennel rest is probably unavoidable, but do it every day and you are asking for a destructive, frustrated, hyper dog. Is there any way that you relieve the dog's boredom? Maybe go home at lunchtime? Put him in day care a few days a week? Work from home? Think about your lifestyle and what you want or need from your dog. Are the two compatible? What changes can you make?

Well, dogs actually believe it or not like to be in kennells because it is their "den". They can see what is going on, yet they are sheltered. DO NOT use the kennell as a punishment or else your dog will NOT LIKE THE KENNELL! Make him sleep there and then he will like it.

WHAT REALLY REALLY REALLY HELPS is if you get a Nylabone (A see through chew toy for dogs that takes years to chew through and dogs LOVE it because it has a certain sent) and you soak it in chicken broth all day. NOW THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT- ONLY give him the bone when he is in his kennell. When he is out he cant have it. It is a reward for being in the kennell and he will want to go in the kennel because he knows that he will get the bone

it really really really does work

=] hope this helped

Ya cant leave a pup/dog in a crate all day. Just doesnt work. Try coming home at lunch or have someone else and let the pup out for a while. Or get yourelf an outside big kennel(10'x10'x6') with a concrete floor or patio block floor to make sure there is no digging out and a nice cozy doghouse. If you think about it ,wouldnt the pup like it better outside in the fresh air and sunshine then in a crate inside? Or there are doggie daycares now.He is just plain bored! Crates are good for a few hours or overnight to sleep in.

ill tell you right off the bat, its not separation anxiety... if it were, almost every dog in the world has it lol. its called being a bored puppy. and how is he getting out? also, you dont need to wait untill he is 2 or 3 to let him have free run, if training is done properly early on, you can have a free dog at an early age. my pup is 7 months and has had free run since she was 6 months. its all about training....
