Default adopting a puppy, confusied with the adopting fee!! plz help?

i am adopting a puppy and from this lady and first she tells me that the fee is $50, now she e mailed me and said that their is no fee, and then she e mailed me again and this is what she wrote:
The $50 is a ‘donation’ to the rescue if you are able...I tell people there is a fee b/c we have to screen homes. Some people are just looking for a ‘free puppy to put in the yard for a guard dog’ kind of thing…especially with Akitas! Once we screen the home and review the application we take it from there… But like I said – most important thing is that they go to a good home & the $$$ spent on the animal as needed. Part of the adoption agreement is that the dogs will be kept on annual vaccinations and monthly heartworm preventative…we will check up with the vets office to make sure this is being done if we suspect the animals aren’t being cared for properly. With rescue there are a lot of private donations made & those people who help fund the work we do need some assurance that
their money isn’t being wasted. For example, these pups have cost me about $300/each to get brought up to date on their medical needs and fostered…so we don’t want to put them into a home where that care wouldn’t be continued, you see? Sorry for the confusion…just part of the process to find the babies the best homes possible.

so what is the fee? please help i want this puppy for my sons 2nd birthday gift
we are getting a new dog cuz my sons dog just died and he is upset, i would like to get one asap but we are in between paycheecks. so we dont have the $50 to spare.
yes i spent 2 hours looking up the breed yesturday. i know what im doing.
they know i have a 2 year old, and they are fine and happy about giving me the dog.
