I adopt adult dogs all the time.....usually they are greatful for being out of the humane society or whatever they are at. Give them like 5-7 days to get use to the new territory, but they are great. Most pick up fast and you don't have to worry about potty training. Go to the place you want to adopt first and see how they will take to you. Once you find a dog that is a great connection with you, get that one.

Oh please do adopt an adult dog! Puppies are so adorable that everyone wants one. Unfortunately, you can never tell what that precious little ball of fuzz is going to turn into or look like. Adult dogs that are adoptable usually have been someone's treasured pet and due to unforeseen circumstances find themselves without a home. They are usually content to lie by the fire and warm your feet. Their needs are much less than an active and full of energy youngster. I do not personally care for chihuahuas, my experience with them has not been pleasant and if they have any behavior problems, they will increase with age. Loads of luck with your new friend.
