Default how do i make my newly adopted 3yr old dog more social and less protective of me?

he is great alone in the house, doesn't chew on anything. He is always in my lap, but sleeps on his dog bed at bed time next to mine (off limits). To me, he is the greatest dog for my lifestyle, but has not taken well to any of my friends or their dogs, even the other dogs in the apartment complex. he especially freaks out when someone gives me a hug or stands close to me. He snarls and yanks on the leash like some bloodthirsty animal when we are on walks and sees another animal. Its like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
