How long is it in dogs with heartworms from the time of infection to tp...

...when they start to show syptoms? I have a terrier/border collie mix and she has been treated with heartworm pills 6 months ago but hasn't had any since....she has been gagging when she gets excited,and I am really worried....by the way,do you think that she has heartworms from the info i've given?
Thank you for your answers...I am going to take her to the vet tommorow!!
