Default My dog is growling but don't show his teeth?

i have a 4 yr old german shepherd. I'v had him since he was 6 wks old. He has starting growling when i go to his cage and he tries to get out i block the door and sometimes he will growl.he has never bit anyone. he has be through training. I let he out evryday for 4-6 hrs. sometimes when he is out and anyone in my family goes to the door to go in our house he will stand by the door and growl. But if I start playing ball or saying "lets go bye bye" he will stop and get away from the door. I dont know what to do? my husband wants to get rid of him but i dont. he is a great dog but the growling worries me to death. What should i do????
