I have a Chihuahua, and sometimes she's mean around little kids too. Usually smaller dogs are territorial, overprotective, or overly concerned with their space. If the dog is showing its teeth (it probably also tenses up), that means it is preparing to defend itself.
After your dog gets used to the kid, it should be more friendly and whatnot. The dog just has to start thinking of him as part of the "pack."

i think that means the dogs a little frightened by the boy and wants attention but just not from him.i think you should get rid of the dog to a older couple or owner i wouldn't suggest having the dog around your children i hope he doesn't bite him good luck....

When you pet the dog does he show his teeth like that? Many little dogs do, and when they go up to a person to be petted they'll show their teeth in anticipation of being petted, thinking about how good it will feel. Sort of like how we smile. So unless the showing of the teeth is also followed by a growl then I would think it is safe to let the boy pet the dog. Just watch the boy to make sure he's not too rough.

Yup, for whatever reason the dog doesn't like your son. You may want to return the dog to the shelter and say it is unsuitable for your family.

This is why the shelter that gave a dog to Ellen was so upset. They want to sure animals are properly placed.

The dog is just intimidated by the boy, maybe he was once tormented by a child. the biggest thing to remember is to teach your child how to behave around a dog. And teach your dog that it is not ok to act like this around your child. You best bet would have been to buy a puppy that way the puppy would have become accustomed to your child. Buying an adult dog is risky when you have a child
