Default How can I train my dog to stop whining when we come in the house?

My 8 yr old beagle, Zoe, whines so high pitched when we or anyone else walks in our door, we have to plug our ears. We adopted her from a shelter and she did it there as well. We have tried ignoring her, petting her, giving her treats...everything. Please help!

She must be miserable as soon as ya'll walk in. I say stay outside in her box and give her the house.

I think that she might lonely. When you go out for long periods of time, put on the television, or radio. She may not be hearing your voice, but it may sound like someone is there.

Is her whining protective or is she interested in something coming into the door, or is she just excited to see you? Most dogs will get curious when someone is at the door.

When you give a dog a treat you are rewarding their good behavior, so I would not give her any treats when she comes to the door because you don't want to reward bad behavior.

When you first come into the door and she is whining just grab a hold of her muzzle with you hand and gently close it and say "no whine." Keep saying "no whine" until she stops. she will probably hate it and try to squirm away but keep a gentle hold until she stops whining and squirming and then give her lots of praise for being a good girl and then you can give her a treat. Repeat this two more times for a couple of days and then she should be good.

If this does not work, let me know and I will think of something else! Good luck with Zoe!

Well, when you leave them, dog's think you've died. And they think it's their fault. Because their job is to look after you. My little pal used to be so overcome he would wet himself when we first got him.

Now, I can't have a dog where I live, though I like dogs better than people. I am sure there is someone like me near you. Find them, and offer them a few quid to look after the dog. We used to pay our sitter about thirty quid a week, she was always available, loved the dog, he loved her, and she was an old girl who needed the money and we were glad to give it to her. End result, happy, well balanced little dog, no longer lonely old woman, no more damage in house, perfitt.
