A few years ago I had a next door neighbour who was deaf and she had a hearing service dog who was a tremendous boon to her. In her case she got the dog already trained rather than training an existing dog herself. If you have experience in dog training you might be able to do some of the training yourself, or you could perhaps contact an organization and ask if they could provide one of their trainers to work with you and your dog for a few days to give you some tips on how to begin training. Otherwise, if you feel your household can support two dogs, you might consider putting your name on the list to get a dog that is already trained as a hearing service dog and keep your current dog as more of a pet.
