Default Our 175lb English Mastiff is lonely. What would be the best breed of dog...

...to look at as a companion? Birdie is a gentle giant. She is more social than alot of the people I know. We hate that she is alone all day. What would be a good breed of dog to look at as a companion for her?

I personally would suggest a Boxer. We have a boxer and our friend has a Mastiff. The mastiff is a little bigger, lol but our boxer likes to play rough and has to date not been hurt by our friends dog. Boxers have high energy and love to play and can handle anything, lol. They are terrific family dogs and very loving and they especially love children. You just have to be willing to get used to their ADHD like behavior, lol. That is my suggestion.

Good luck!

Breeds stick together when the rest of the pack (your family)is gone. If you have the room, I'd suggest another Mastiff (male).

Probably not a small dog, as they might accidentally get crushed if Birdie wants to play. I know that my dog (Manny the English Bulldog) always thinks of small dogs as his own personal chew toys, so I have to keep him from them. On the other hand, you probably don't want a dog breed that is similar to a Mastiff, because there might be a territorial thing there. How about a Golden Retriever? They grow big enough to where they'd be able to hold their own in a wrestling match with a Mastiff, but they have the nicest temperament. Either that or a Lab, that's what I'd go with. Oh, but those kinds of dogs are really active, so if you'd rather have more of a couch potato dog, a Bassett Hound might be a good choice too.
