Default Suggestion for dog food?

Just got a new friend yesterday from our local Humane Society. He's a real sweetheart, his name was Drake but hubby decided to change it to Draco ("so he sounds more like a dragon than a duck" - heh). He is about 7 months old, fixed, lab/shepherd mix, and he already feels like he's been with our family for years.

I'm going to the store today to buy some dog food for him, but I've never owned a pup before. He's been on "Science Diet Puppy/Adult" food - a mix because of his age - but it's a bit out of our price range (besides the fact that they don't sell that at our local stores!)

I wondered if anyone could make a good suggestion for me of food to get for him... also, should we get puppy food or still do a mix of puppy/adult and for how long? He's grown to his adult size, and I've been told his breed has a tendency toward being overweight if you're not careful... so we'd like to have a good quality food for him. No Gravytrain, healthy stuff. Thanks so much for your suggestions!

I just want to Thank You, for rescuing this puppy! It sounds like he's going to have a real loving home.Science Diet, is not a good food, neither are foods sold at Walmart or Grocery Stores! I feed my dogs, Canidae All Life Stages! It's high quality, all natural, healthy, made for all stages of a dogs life, and very reasonably priced. Not sold in a lot of stores! Go to this link:
http://www.canidae.com/dogs/all_life_stages/dry.html
Then go to the Store Locator Link:
http://www.canidae.com/company/storelocator.html
Type in the city you live in, and it will bring up a list of stores in your area that carry it. It also lasts longer, because they don't have to eat as much to fill up, they still get all the nutrients they need, so in the long run, you save money. Just make sure that no matter what food you decide to feed him, switch him slowly, by mixing the old food with a little of the new food and every couple of days, add more new food to the old food, until he is eating the new food only! Switching foods too fast, will cause stomach upset, diarrhea, and vomiting! I just wanted to add this link which has Customer Tesimonials of people that feed their dogs Canidae All Life Stages, and their thoughts on the food!

Have fun with him and enjoy him! Congratulations and Good Luck!
