Default What is your opinion on Royal Canin brand cat and dog food?

I have an 8 yr old, obese British shorthair cat that is sensitive to many catfood brands. He was often constipated and had bright red blood in his stool that smelled awful. The vet(s) told me that he had food allergies and recommended Hills Science diet or Eukanuba wt loss diet. I had him on both diets for quite sometime, both left him severely constipated and produced even more blood. I finally tried Nutro Wt Management diet. He has been on it for over a year with no problems and normal stool, but has only recently began having diarhea that smells putrid. He does not receive any human food of any kind. His vets told me to switch back to Hills science diet, but I am reluctant to as it made him so ill. I am interested in using the Royal Canin brand cat food but I would like to know other people's experience with it before trying it out. Please help.

Royal Canin is a VERY good quality food. My two Persians eat the Royal Canin Persian. The protein in Royal Canin foods tends to be much higher than lower quality brands. I also like that they have breed-specific choices, like the Persian 30 that is especially shaped for flat-faced kitties, contains hairball remedy and is specifically formulated for Persians. They also cover specific cat issues with their "Intense Hairball", "Light", etc. They have a line of veterinary diet formulas as well - "Diabetics", "Renal", "Recovery", etc. Another thing I like about Royal Canin is that they are VERY generous to shelters. The cat shelter I volunteer with regular gets cases and cases and cases of samples to give out with our adoptions and at fundraising events. They also supply us with food for the cats at the shelter.

Someone else mentioned Innova Evo. That is one of the best foods on the market. It's 50% protein and contains no grain. And with less added in junk like others foods your food-allergic cat may do well on it. It does cost a bit more but since it's more nutrient dense the cats eat less of it. My cats eat Innova Evo as well as the Royal Canin.

You might want to try Innova EVO. It is one of the best cat foods. It is a bit expensive but there are no fillers in it like grain and crap. The hard food is mostly meat and the canned stuff is like 95% meat. You can get it at pet stores. If they do not carry it ask them to order you some.

It's a quality food. We recommend it and stock it at the vet hospital where I work.

Hills Prescription Diet has become less palatable to cats for some reason, so we are recommending Royal Canin.

By the way, vets don't get a "kickback" from any pet food company. They do get pay less for it than they sell if for (about 10%) but so do stores.

I work at an animal hospital and it is one of the brands that we carry and recommend. You could try Royal Canin calorie control formula to help him lose weight, or Royal Canin Hypo Hp it is a hypoallergenic food to help with his food allergies , it is also recommended to help with GastroIntestinal problems..so it may help with his diarrhea. I am not sure if the pet store would carry these specific diets, but your vet should be able to order it in for you. Just remember to mix his new food with whatever you are feeding now for about 2 weeks to gradually introduce the new food, otherwise he could have more diarrhea from the sudden switch of food.

Royal Canin isn't that great of food although it is better then Science Diet.

The reason the vets keep telling you to feed Science Diet is because they get a "kick back" from the company for selling their food. It really is sad. Science Diet isn't good for any cat or dog, whether they are healthy or sick. Avoid that food!

I think you should look into Innova EVO. It is completely grain free and has no fillers or by-products. It is considered to be the BEST cat food you could feed a cat. Wet food is best for all cats but if you have to use dry food for whatever reason with your cat it is the best one you can use. It cost more then lower quality food but because it is human grade meat your cat will actually need less of it. You wont find this food at Petco or any grocery store but their website (which I will post below) has a "where to buy” section where you can find several stores near you.

Good luck to you and your poor kitty.

vets will preach science diet...they know nothing else. and they get money for it. take it from someone whos studied pet nutriton. holistic is best. all natural is best. organic is best!!! but when it comes to quality and such some brands tower over others. i recomend eaglepack holistic select duck and oatmeal formula. it has naturally occuring digestive enzymes that help absorb nutrition more, ease the tummy, firm up stools and increase immunity. it also has the daily recomended value of any aafco standard and some other perks like kelp and yucca omega fatty acids etc....... i preach this brand because it saved my dogs life and is the brand the vets office i work for now gives out ( along with wellness and innova but EPHS is less expensive and not as rich!!) my llassa apso and mixed cat are allergiv to wheat and my cat cant have corn...this product saved me from smelly litterboxes and a near death in allergies dog.
