Default grooming my dog? help??

well my dogs nails are getting pretty long how do i clip them? he has a couple of solid black nails that i cant see through is that a problem? im trying to see how i can clip them myself without having to go to a dog groomer so i could save a bit of money.

also what are some good shampoos for dogs to get rid of what i like to call "the sweaty dog scent"
im use to filing my dogs nail but it takes hours because i never tried the clippers, if he lets me file them using a loud sound from the filer im sure he would let me clip them i wont get bit :P

They have dog nail clippers at pet supply stores. Package should have directions on how to do it... but you just clip the very tip off. Be careful and make sure not to get the vein.
Our dog had really bad dandruff and our oatmeal based shampoo worked well to get rid of it... and it smells so good I use it on myself sometimes

Note: drugging your dog shouldn't be necessary. Just tempt them with treats so that they associate grooming with num nums.

Yes definitely get some dog nail clippers. They'll make your life so much easier.

Talk to an employee at Petsmart about what clipper you should get. It's fine that he has a few black nails, that's normal for every dog. You should cut his nails every two months. Make sure you cut them the right length though. If you cut them too short, they could bleed and that wouldn't be good. Actually, Petsmart has this special powder that you sprinkle onto the bleeding and it immediately stops. It is painless, and the employee that I talked to said that she even used it on her son sometimes! If you have a big dog, I really think that you should get his nails clipped by a groomer because it's usually hard to control them and to get them to stay still. Otherwise, if he's a small dog, it would be easier to handle him and get him to stay still. I have a Bichon, and to clip his nails I have him lay on my lap and I clip them. After each nail, I give him a Cheerio for a little reward =].

I know what you mean by the "sweaty dog smell". A really good smelling shampoo is Head and Shoulders for dogs. You are only supposed to give your dog a bath once every two weeks, and your dog is likely to get dirty within then. So, you should wipe him with baby wipes to get rid of some of the smell.

Good luck!

i cut my own dogs nails you can buy a nail set for animals from most pet stores it will cost around 10 pounds but it saves you spending money on groomers every week, they are shaped for dogs nails just clip the end of the dogs nail dont go to far down because you will hit the dogs nerve and make it bleed also walking the dog on pavement will file down the dogs nails hope this helps.

They have a set of nail clippers that determines where the quick is, I would look for those....It hurts like hell if you break a nail above skin, so you can imagine what it would feel like for your dog.

They sell a special tool for clipping a dogs nails. But be careful if you try it your self you can make him/her bleed if you do it too short. My vet has done it to my dog before then they had to use some kind of medicine to stop the bleeding. So be careful and good luck!
(hope you don't get bit)
